-via Guru Prasad When Spanish flu had gripped the world (India as well) in 1918, a just born baby in Mysore affected by the deadly disease had turned weak and suffered from innumerable diseases over the next few years through its childhood. Doctors had given up hopes (child mortality was common those days) and by the age of 12, death had almost come down knocking at his door. That was when the legendary Yoga Guru T. Krishnamacharya (blessed by His Holiness Mysore Maharaja Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar to spread Yoga to the world) took this ailing boy to his school and taught him Yoga. It not only cured his diseases but he became one of the earliest disciples of Krishnamacharya and went on to become one of the pioneers in Yoga by authoring some of the most popular books on Yoga & Pranayama and created his own variant of Yoga which helped millions all over the world lead a healthy lifestyle. He attributed all his success to Yoga without which he would have painfully left the world in 1920s itself. India honored him with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan & Padma Vibhushan. He was listed as one of the top 100 influential people of the world by TIME. Even communist countries like China had acknowledged his efforts by issuing stamps in his honour. Today, at the age of 96, he breathe his last. BKS Iyengar is no more, but his legend will continue to live on forever. May his soul rest in peace and may his contributions to the world continue to inspire generations to come.
