08-14-14. Foley, Alabama This is the life story of a baby goat.. He got his name today, Lucky... Lucky Goat... Kinda goofy, lol, we know... But it fits him.. A baby goat 2 days old with the umbilical cord still attached to him... No mom.. The neighbors had bought a baby goat.. Not sure if the neighbors knew much about caring for a goat but good for him a sweet lady knew a few things and she lived next door... She started bottle feeding the goat, weeks went by and this sweet thing was growing and starting to eat grass and all so the bottle feeding ended.. Now the baby goat is 2 months and yesterday the lady next door notices Baby goat isnt doing too good. Hes not using his back leg and it swollen.. Hes just dragging it behind him. It looks broke. She asks the neighbor what happened and they dont know. They dont have the money for a vet and cant let it suffer so they are going to shot it.. ( I guess this isnt uncommon with farm animals... Crappy... But not uncommon) The lady cant stand the idea of them shooting him and ask if she can have the goat & she will take it to the vet.. The neighbors told her if you want him and can get him better, you can have him... So she agrees and takes the goat home.. Calling vet after vet and no one is willing to help.. The only 2 vets that will take a goat are 100s miles away...Finally after calling her personal vet 3 times, they agreed to see the goat. Bring it in... Afternoon was late so decided to take the goat first thing in the morning.. Next morning, at the vet, and X-rays are done and the leg isnt broke.. BUT its been badly injured. A cut of some sort and maggots were even eating on it.. The leg had even started to heal itself and there was maggots inside the wound..The goat wasnt using its back leg but only dragging it.. No feeling in his leg.. There was 3 options. 1 is to put the goat to sleep.. 2 is to clean out the wound and hope that the goat eventually regains feelings in the leg. If not it can set up trouble in the future and infection again leading to amputation or 3 is to go ahead and amputate his back leg... Phone calls were made, advice was given , the lady didnt know what to do.. She has lots of dogs and cant keep this goat at home..She decides to have the wound cleaned and see what happens. Meanwhile try to find someone to foster this baby goat.. Did I mention how sweet this baby is!? The lady realizes, this baby goat doesnt have a name. No name ... Hmm. Well, lets name him Lucky. He only has 3 working legs, it just seemed to fit.. Lucky Goat.. What a name for this baby! She walks back into the vet to let them know what she decides and the vet tells her, We have a vet tech here that wants take your goat. He has 10 acres and this goat will have a good life.. If you pay for todays visit, the tech will pay for the amputation and take care of everything else. The vet felt the risk was too great just to clean it and would cause too many problems later for the baby goat.. So she thinks about it and agrees.. She signs the papers giving Lucky Goat to the vet tech.. Feeling sad & relieved at the same time, Lucky was going to have a great life.... Unfortunately, surgery was too much for Lucky. He passed away on the operating table..He was under too long for the surgery and his heart couldnt stay strong. The vet was stitches up his leg from the amputation when he passed away.. Rest in Peace Lucky Goat... Your sweet lady loves you and wants you to run free with no pain!
