083/14 – BRITISH COLUMBIA LORD STRATHCONA SCHOLARSHIP 1. In 1909, Lord Strathcona established the Lord Strathcona Trust Fund (LSTF) to encourage patriotism, physical training and military drill in the schools of Canada. While the Cadet Program has evolved over time, these fundamental goals of patriotism, physical training and military drill have endured amongst the young Canadians who participate as Royal Canadian Sea, Army and Air Cadets. 2. The British Columbia Lord Strathcona Scholarship will be awarded to up to three individuals in the fall of each year, in an amount that is determined by the LSTF Committee annually. 3. The Scholarship will be awarded to cadets or former cadets, COATS members or civilians associated with the CCO in British Columbia and enrolled in a physical fitness or related program at a Canadian post-secondary institute. Applications are to be submitted by 30 June annually to the Secretary of the British Columbia LSTF Committee at the Regional Cadet Support Unit (Pacific). The following shall be included in the application: a. British Columbia Lord Strathcona Trust Fund Scholarship Application form (attached as annex C to this RO and also available in elemental conferences on CadetNet); b. a narrative written by the applicant outlining their involvement and/or contributions to the Canadian Cadet Organizations, particularly as it pertains to the aims of the Lord Strathcona Trust Fund (patriotism, physical training and military drill). The narrative shall not exceed one page in length; and c. proof of enrollment in or application to an accredited Canadian post-secondary institute in an area of study related to physical fitness. While proof of application will be sufficient, the actual presentation of the scholarship funds to successful applicants shall not take place until proof of enrolment/acceptance has been provided. 4. In 2014, up to 3 British Columbia Lord Strathcona Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 each.
