1. Government convenes June regular meeting The Government discussed national socio-economic performance, defence and security situation in the first half of the year and worked out a plan for the remainder of 2014 at a two-day regular meeting convened on June 30. As reported at the meeting, inflation has been controlled, the consumer price index (CPI) has increased slightly, market prices have maintained stable and supply and demand has been balanced. Exports maintained high growth and the State budget collection volume was higher than for the same period last year. Regarding China’s illegal actions in the East Sea, leaders in some localities asked the Government to take relevant measures to actively cope with unexpected negative situations in economic, trade and investment relations with China, while issuing special assistance policies for fishermen and mobilising the international community’s support in safeguarding national sovereignty. 2. Party, State leaders meet voters nationwide Party and State leaders had a busy week as they met with voters nationwide to hear their opinions and recommendations about the country’s pressing problems. At the meetings, the high-profile officials informed local voters of the outcomes of the recently concluded National Assembly plenary session, during which a number of laws were adopted and amended to deal with new issues arising from a constantly changing socio-economic landscape. While raising strong voices to oppose China’s placement of its Haiyang Shiyou 981 rig within Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, voters expressed their trust in Party and State guidelines for solving tensions in East Sea and protecting the country’s sovereignty through peaceful measures, in line with international law. 4. Vietnam has maintained peaceful measures and communication channels at various levels with China to find solutions to East Sea dispute after China illegally placed its Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig in Vietnam’s waters, Foreign Ministry spokesman, Le Hai Binh said at a regular press conference in Hanoi on July 3. Vietnamese law enforcement forces have persistently implemented peaceful communication measures to require China to withdraw its rig, together with escort ships and aircraft, from Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, he said, adding that the persistence in order to avoid unruly and aggressive acts by Chinese vessels has been witnessed and highly appreciated by the international community and foreign correspondents present at the site. The spokesman said that every move of the stakeholders in the East Sea should abide by international law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, respect the sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction of the concerned countries in the East Sea and not make the situation more complicated, affecting peace and stability as well as normal civilian activities in the region. 5. More protest against China’s illegal act The Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations on July 3 sent a paper to UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon protesting against China’s illegal placement of Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil rig Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. Earlier on June 30, associations for friendship with Vietnam in various European countries issued a joint resolution demanding that China respect international law, immediately withdraw its oil rig from Vietnam’s waters, and stop all violent actions. The Vietnam Journalists Association (VJA) on June 29 also issued a statement requesting that China immediately stop its provocative acts and violations of Vietnam’s sea and island sovereignty. 6. Over 570,000 high school graduates sit university entrance exams More than 571,000 high school students nationwide sat for the first phase of this year’s national university entrance examinations on July 4-5. As many as 141 universities and colleges organised examinations, with over 24,000 exam rooms in 983 venues. The number of registered applications was 571,688, accounting for nearly 75% of the total enrolment. More than 22,000 university students and youth volunteers have been mobilised to help candidates and relatives find accommodation and ways of getting to the exam venues in the big cities. 7. Vietnamese photographer’s work wins European prize Vietnamese photographer, Tran Viet Van has won a gold medal at the Prix de la Photographie, Paris 2014 for his photo collection named ‘War Commanders in Peacetime‘. The photos were taken since 2009 and depict the country’s top-ranking commanders. Van offers a clear insight into the simple lives of the retired commanders,, who all find joy in taking care of their grandchildren, playing chess, pruning bonsai and contemplating their collections of medals. He also captured their happy moments at family meals and meetings with old comrades. 8. Vietnamese film festival underway in France Vietnamese actors at the festival (photo: VNA) A selection of 15 Vietnamese films in different genres is being screened at the first Vietnamese Film Festival in the northwestern port city of Saint Malo, France from July 1-6, as part of activities in the framework of the Year of Vietnam in France in 2014. The six-day event provides the French audience with a better view of Vietnamese cinema, as well as its cinematic talents. It also helps the French public gain a deeper understanding of the nation, history, culture and society of Vietnam and offers a good chance for French and Vietnamese film-makers to share experiences, while opening up new prospects for the cinematography sectors of both countries. 9. Vietnam wins friendly as coach debuts Vietnamese players demolished Myanmar 6-0 in a friendly match at Go Dau Stadium in Binh Duong province on July 2. The commanding victory was a perfect start to the national football team under Japanese coach Toshiya Miura, allowing home fans to hope for a brilliant performance at the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup in three months’ time.
