1. Prayer for Repentance Father, as we come to you today, the desire of our hearts is for the repentance of our nation. We echo your words through the prophet Jeremiah when you said: Jeremiah 8:4-6 (NIV) - “Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: When men fall down, do they not get up? When a man turns away, does he not return? Why then have these people turned away? Why does Jerusalem always turn away? They cling to deceit; they refuse to return. I have listened attentively, but they do not say what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Each pursues his own course like a horse charging into battle….’ ” Forgive us God for falling down & not getting up. Forgive us God for turning away from you & not returning to you. Forgive us God for clinging to deceit. Forgive us God for not saying what is right. Forgive us God for pursuing our own course. Forgive us God for not repenting of our wickedness. As we have asked your forgiveness our God, we also ask that you give our nation your grace to repent. Let this repentance come from every corner of our nation, from every person in our nation, from every leader in our nation, from every Christian in our nation & from every church in our nation. We acknowledge your message of repentance through your Old Testament prophets, through John the Baptist & through our Savior Jesus Christ. We acknowledge your message of repentance through Scripture & as proclaimed even in our nation through faithful servants. We pray for genuine repentance in America. We pray for a repentance that results from a “godly sorrow” (II Corinthians 7:10). We pray for a repentance that produces fruit for you (Luke 3:8). We pray for a repentance that acknowledges all people are created in your image & are to be treated with respect & dignity, even the unborn. We pray for repentance from sinful & selfish thinking to godly thinking. We pray for repentance from sinful & selfish choices to godly choices. We pray for repentance from sinful & selfish lifestyles to godly lifestyles. We pray for repentance from sinful & selfish inaction to godly action. We pray for repentance from sinful & selfish churches to godly churches. We pray for repentance from hearts so attached to the world that we even fail to hear your voice calling us to repentance. As we pray for repentance we thank you for your promised blessings. We acknowledge that the greatest blessings of our nation will come when we live faithfully & consistently for you. For as we read in Scripture you tell us: II Chronicles 7:13-14 (NIV) - “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves & pray & seek my face & turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven & will forgive their sin & will heal their land.” Lord, give us ears to hear your call to repent. Give us broken hearts filled with a longing to repent. Give us your servants who faithfully call us to repent. And thank you Lord that you will hear our prayers, that you will forgive our sin & that you will heal our land when we do repent. 2. Prayer for Leaders Lord we also pray for our nation’s leaders. We are thankful for our leaders because your Word teaches us that “there is no authority except that which God has established.” (Romans 13:1). Lord, you alone are our sovereign King, but in your wisdom you have given us human leaders. We pray that you will give our leaders at every level of government, from local to national, hearts that desire to follow your leadership. We pray you will give them wisdom, godly counsel, courage & people who will consistently pray for them. 3. Prayer for Salvation God, we know that Jesus is our only Savior & that true repentance can come only when we know him. We also know that it is your desire that “all men are saved & come to a knowledge of the truth.” (I Timothy 2:4). So, today we pray that those who do not know Jesus as Savior will by faith come to know him. And for those of us who are already believers, we pray that we will, by your grace, live our lives under the Lordship of Jesus. So, Lord today we thank you greatly for our nation, our community & our leaders. We thank you for the opportunity to repent & for your promised blessings resulting from our repentance. And we thank you for our only Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. It is in his name we pray. Amen
