1. THE PROVISION OF SUSTAINING BREAD FOR THE BODY Matthew 6:11; Genesis 1:27-29; 2:8,9a; 3:19; Acts 14:15-17; Exodus 16:4; Psalms 105:40-45; 7:3-11, 25;132:13-15; 2 Kings 25:28-30. “Give us this day our daily bread.” The word, bread, is very expressive, referring to food, nourishment and necessities to support, sustain and strengthen the body; all temporal blessings suitable for our earthly existence and all we need to keep the body in health and vigour. That the bread denotes everything necessary to sustain life is seen from the use of the word in the Scripture (2 Corinthians 9:10,11; Matthew 15:25-28; Proverbs 20:13; Ecclesiastes 11:1; Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4; John 6:33-35). The prayer expresses our personal need, our conscious dependence on God, our quiet contentment and our childlike trust in the heavenly Father. God has made adequate provision for all things needful and necessary for our lives. We can pray and ask Him: “Give us this day our daily bread ” because God, our Father, is a Giver. “He giveth to all life and breath, and all things.” “The living God giveth us richly all things to enjoy.” “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father.” “He giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not.” “How much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask Him.” “My Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.” “He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” (Acts 17:25; 1 Timothy 6:17; James 1:17,5; Matthew 7:11; John 6:32; Romans 8:32).
