(1) What is Aashooraa? (2)Why do Muslims fast on the day of Aashooraa? (3)Is it obligatory upon Muslims to fast on the day of Aashooraa? (4) Who else used to fast on the day of Aashooraa and why? (5)How should we (Muslims) fast? (6)What do hadiths suggest about fasting in the month of Muharram? FOLLOWING ARE THE ANSWERS WITH EVIDENCE FROM AUTHENTIC SAYINGS OF OUR PROPHET PEACE BE UPON HIM (1) Aashooraa is the 10th day of Muharram (The first month of Islamic calendar). (2) Prophet peace be upon him asked Jews for fasting on the day of Aashooraa they replied that this is a blessed day for them because on this day Allah saved Moosa and the children of Israel from their enemies so Moosa fasted by hearing this our prophet said I am worthier of Moosa than you are so our prophet fasted on this day and commanded to fast too. The hadith that proves this point can be found in sahih Al-Bukhari (3)Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said: “Concerning the day of ‘Aashooraa’, it is not obligatory upon you to fast on it as I do. Whoever wishes may fast and whoever does not wish, is not obliged to do so.” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim] (4) Jews fasted on this day. They said its a blessed day for them because Moosa and children of Israel were saved by Allah so Moosa fasted. (5) In order to differ from Jews we Muslims should fast on: 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th or 9th , 10th and 11th. Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allaah mercy upon him, have stated that fasting of ‘Aashooraa’ is of three levels: ●The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Observe fasting on the day of ‘Aashooraa’, but differ from the Jews and fast one day before it and one day after it. [Ahmad] ●Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him used to say: “We are to fast on two days: the 9th and 10th of Muharram to distinguish ourselves from the Jews.” [At-Tirmithi] ● Fasting only 10th of Muharram (as our prophet only fasted on the 10th) Muslims shouldnt only fast on the 10th because we should differ from Jews and our prophet clearly said “If I live to next year, I shall also fast on the 9th day (as well as the 10th). [Ahmad] (6) Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him reported: “I asked the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam : Which prayer is the best after the obligatory prayers? He said: Prayer during the middle of the night. I asked: Which fast is the best after the fast of Ramadan?’ He said: The month of Allaah that you call Muharram.’” [Muslim, Ahmad and Abu Daawood] May Allah enable us to act upon the above sayings of our prophet
