10/11/2013 November 10 Lord’s Day I received from the Lord, that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus, in the night in which He was delivered up, took bread … For as often as ye shall eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye announce the death of the Lord, until He come. (1 Corinthians 11:23,26) This most remarkable request received from the Lord, from the lips of the once crucified Savior but now risen and glorified Son of Man, encompasses God’s thoughts concerning His Christ. Paul had received this new revelation concerning the Lord’s Supper from the Man in the glory, the One who—though God—humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, and that the death of the cross (Phil. 2:5-8). Great indeed is the mystery of piety, God is manifest in flesh! (1 Tim. 3:16). The One who created the universe by His word, and upholds all things by His power, Himself stooped down as the dependant, obedient, lowly Man with an opened ear to receive directions for the day from God His Father. That is how He would begin each day, and how He continued, walking each step of the way that led Him to that bitter cross of shame (Isa. 50:3-5). Truly, we exclaim: Hallelujah, what a Savior! In verse 23 we are reminded that on the night of Christ’s betrayal this supper was given to His redeemed people. In the world where Christ is despised and rejected, there is now a company of saints, cleansed by His blood, surrounding the Lord at His table, to remember Him. Remembering Him draws out our hearts to offer sacrifices of praise and worship to the alone worthy One, our Lord Jesus Christ. Then, what rises up to God as a sweet fragrance of Christ—the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name—spreads in testimony to this world. Thereby we loudly and clearly proclaim the victory Christ has gained by His death on the cross. He has triumphed gloriously! J. Redekop
