#10, October 22. Basket Case, 1982. This is THE movie that got me into horror. I think I mentioned a while ago that my dad used to watch horror with me when I was young, much to the disapproval of my mom. The earliest horror movie I remember seeing was Basket Case, and after I saw it I was hooked on horror for life. One of the weirdest movies youll ever see, it tells the story of Duane Bradley, a shy young man who checks into a sleezy New York hotel with nothing but a wicker basket and lots of cash. He talks to the basket and throws food into it. As it turns out, inside is Belial, his grotesquely deformed brother who was surgically detached from Duanes side as a kid. Duane describes him as looking like a squashed octopus. He and Belial are on a mission to find the two doctors who performed the operation and seek revenge. Despite being loaded with gross images, bloody violence, and over-the-top murders, this movie offers its own bit of charm. Sure it has some terrible acting but who cares? If you popped in Basket Case to get Oscar caliber performances youre on the wrong track. One surprising factor for me is how believable Belial becomes. In most scenes he is a puppet but in a few he is stop motion and yet I am convinced he was real because I sort of felt for him. He is hideous and spends his life in a wicker basket, sure I can have pity on him. Duane and Belial can communicate telepathically which also sounds kind of hokey but, again, it seems to work for the movie. There are a number of cool deaths but my favorite has to be the scalpel drawer scene, Ill just leave it at that. Truly, I owe my entire horror fandom to being introduced to Basket Case by my dad. If you like horror and havent seen it, you better get on that. https://youtube/watch?v=_uQj7j8yG6A
