10 WAYS TO SHOW OUR LOVE FOR THE COUNTRY AS A TOURISM STUDENT 1. Patronizing our own products in or out the country and encouraging others to experience it, too. You are not only becoming patriotic, you are also helping your fellow Filipinos grow their business, promote their own brand and market their products even if it is only a small or medium scale. Sometimes, it is not about who is selling or what is being sold, it is about how you can help our country in the quest for business growth, product popularity and acceptance. 2. Be proud of our culture and embolden others to experience and embrace our unique beliefs, values and tradition. Celebrating our traditions and being involved when simple or special occasions are celebrated in our countries. It is important that we first learn about our culture in order to gain self-awareness because our identity is a powerful feeling that strengthens self-esteem. A person without a clear identity will, unfortunately, not develop a strong self-esteem. We can’t love what we are if we don’t know who we are and where we come from. And most importantly, we should be respectful of ones culture without disrespecting and alienating everyone elses. 3. Share your stories and experiences in your own country. One way of promoting your country is by word of mouth. It is one of the best things in marketing your product(your country). Also try sharing and posting your photos and putting a short description on how you felt during that said experience. 4. Too much colonial mentality is bad. We often hear Filipinos complain that as a nation we are afflicted with a colonial mentality. We must examine carefully from a nationalist perspective all aid offered, all loans granted, all programs suggested by foreign governments and institutions. Only then can we begin to rid ourselves of our unfortunate inability to see the contradiction between our interests and theirs. 5. Study some history and traditions of other peoples of the earth, your country, or your home town. Be proud of your own culture, but also smile and admire other ways of life as examples of the diversity of the nations and regions of interest to you. Accept these differences. Understand we are all human, and we all have our own opinions, habits and ways of life. Filipino culture is characterized by an openness to the outside--adapting and incorporating the foreign elements into our image of ourselves. Yet this image is not built around a deep core of Philippine history and language. The result is a cultural vagueness or weakness that makes Filipinos extraordinarily susceptible to the wholesome acceptance of modern mass culture which is often Western. Thus, there is preference for foreign fashion, entertainment, lifestyles, technology, consumer items, etc. 6. Filipinos have a colonial mentality which is made up of two dimensions: the first is a lack of patriotism or an active awareness, appreciation, and love of the Philippines; the second is an actual preference for things foreign. The Filipino colonial mentality is manifested in the alienation of the elite from their roots and from the masses, as well as in the basic feeling of national inferiority that makes it difficult for Filipinos to relate as equals to Westerners. 7. By simply participating well during the flag ceremony and singing the National Anthem. In that way you can show your respect to your country, to the people who fought for our countrys freedom, and to all the Filipinos in our country. 8. By following the examples of patriotism of our heroes, by being part of the change that will bring back pride of the Filipino race and, more importantly, by helping improve the lives of our people in our own little way. Loving our country also means possessing an unyielding desire for our country to become a great nation given our talent, intelligence and resources and continuing to nourish this great dream for our country and people. 9. Focus on whats happening in your country. Know some of the activities your country gets involved with and share your opinion on whether it’s a good or a bad idea. If it is good then we must help patronize or commercialize it and help our country have a better economy. And if it is a bad idea, we must let our voice be heard by the government. 10. Celebrate holidays. We must not only celebrate holidays because we don’t have classes, but because these days mark some historical events in the past. Our heroes may have won the war or we gain independence, no matter what holiday it is, our country is a free country as of today because of what happened in the past so we must celebrate it.
