10 facts about Nadigar Thillagam Sivaji Ganesan 1) He was the first Indian film actor to win a Best Actor award in an International film festival, the Afro-Asian Film Festival held in Cairo, Egypt in 1960. 2) He was also the first Indian actor to be made a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres - a French award for outstanding artists. 3) He is referred to as The Marlon Brando of Indian Cinema 4) He has won the Presidents Award more than 12 times and was conferred the highest and the most prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to Indian cinema in 1997. 5) In the film Navarathiri (1964), he played nine different roles that represented the nine emotional states of a person. 6) When President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt visited India, Sivaji Ganesan was the only individual, granted permission by the then-Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to host a party for Nasser. 7) Sivaji Ganesan was the first artist from India to visit the United States, in the cultural exchange programme of the US government in 1962, invited by the then-US President John F. Kennedy, where he took on the role of Indias cultural ambassador. During his visit there, he was honoured by being made the honorary mayor of Niagara Falls, New York for one day and was presented the key to the city. 8) He became famous overnight with his famous lengthy dialogue delivery in his first film, Parasakthi. 9) The movie Karnan is a milestone for Indian Cinema.
