100 Day Song Challenge Day 94: A song by an artist/band that you think is over-rated. Firstly I must be clear I love The Las and I think Lee Mavers is a fantastic songwriter and certainly a big influence. I was knocked out by the first album but herein lies the problem ONE album 24 years ago and unlike Syd Barret he didnt have a full mental breakdown or die in an accident like Jeff Buckley. That one album was in the making for years and recorded 4 times before the label went enough is enough and put out the last version,t he Mike Hedges Version, version No. 3 is the best and is worth seeking out ,which Lee Mavers promptly disowned). In the time since a whole mythos has arisen over Lee Mavers, making him out to be some great lost genius as opposed to a man who has clearly been happy enough to live on the royalties from There She Goes rather than make a new album he was actually happy with. Even with the the full 2005 reunion he continued to play just old songs from a then 14 year old album rather than any new songs he was said to have written and that is simply not even trying and certainly not worthy of of the myth and legend that has been created around him. So it is that respect that I must consider a band and a songwriter whom I greatly admire to be over rated.
