108 years ago today the first ever Grand Prix gets underway. Although not the first motor race to have taken place - the race that took place on June 26 & 27th 1906 (on closed roads just outside the French city of Le Mans) is regarded by many as the venue for the very first Grand Prix (Grandes Épreuves). Originally planned to run clockwise, it was decided to retain a tradition dating back to Roman times and run the cars, like the Roman chariots did, anti-clockwise. Strangely, the grandstands were placed on the inside of the track and the pits on the outside - thus making access to and from the stands somewhat difficult during the race.
