10월 9일 “능히 너희를 보호하사 거침이 없게 하시고.” [유다서 1:24] 어떤 의미에서 천국으로 가는 길은 아주 안전합니다. 그러나 또 어떤 점에서 보면 그보다 더 위험한 길도 없습니다. 그 길은 많은 곤란이 따릅니다. 발을 잘못 디디면(하나님의 은혜가 없다면 이렇게 헛발질하기가 얼마나 쉬운지 모릅니다) 넘어지고 맙니다. 또 어떤 이들은 굉장히 미끄러운 길을 밟아야 합니다! 그래서 시편 기자처럼 “나는 거의 실족할 뻔하였고 내 걸음이 미끄러질 뻔하였다”(시 73:2)고 자주 외쳐야만 합니다. 만일 우리가 강건하여 넘어지지 않고 산을 잘 타는 사람이라면 이런 것이 크게 문제되지 않을 것입니다. 그러나 우리는 얼마나 약한 존재인지 모릅니다! 포장이 잘된 길에서도 곧잘 비틀거리며 아주 평탄한 길에서도 금방 넘어지는 존재입니다. 약한 무릎이 비틀거리는 몸무게를 잘 받쳐 주지 못합니다. 그래서 지푸라기에도 걸려 넘어지고 조약돌에도 걸려 상처를 입습니다. 우리는 이처럼 아주 조심조심하며 믿음의 첫발을 내딛는 어린아이에 불과합니다. 하나님 아버지께서 그 팔로 우리를 붙잡아 주시니 망정이지 그렇지 않으면 곧 넘어지고 말 것입니다. 만일 하나님이 우리를 보호하사 거쳐 넘어지지 않게 해주시는 거라면, 매일 오래 참으시며 우리를 지켜 보시는 하나님의 능력에 대해 얼마나 많이 감사해야 하겠습니까! 한번 생각해 보십시오. 우리는 얼마나 죄짓기에 빠르며, 위험을 선택하는 경향이 많고, 또 걸핏하면 낙심합니까? 이런 것들을 생각할 때 가장 아름다운 노래로 하나님을 찬양해야 합니다. “우리를 보호하사 거침이 없게 하시는(실족지 않게 하시는) 하나님께 영광이 있을지어다.” 우리 주변에는 우리를 실족시키려고 애쓰는 원수들이 많이 있습니다. 갈 길은 험하고 우리는 약합니다. 그뿐인 줄 아십니까? 원수들은 매복하여 숨어 있다가 전혀 생각지도 않을 때 뛰어나와 우리를 넘어뜨리려 하거나 가장 가까운 곳에 있는 절벽 아래로 떨어뜨리려 합니다. 오직 전능하신 하나님의 팔만이 우리를 파멸시키려고 애쓰는 눈에 보이지 않는 이런 원수들로부터 우리를 보존해 주실 수 있습니다. 전능하신 하나님의 팔이 우리를 보호하고 계십니다. 그는 약속하신 대로 신실하시며 우리를 보호하사 거침이 없게 해주십니다. 그래서 우리는 자신이 전적으로 약함을 깊이 의식하면서도 우리가 온전히 안전하다는 사실을 깊이 확신하며 자신 있게 이렇게 말할 수 있습니다. “이 세상과 지옥이 힘을 합쳐 나를 대적하지만 하나님의 능력이 내 편에 계신다. 아무도 당할 수 없는 예수님, 그 예수님이 내 편이시다!” 찰스 스펄전 ------------------------------- "How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life—and only a few ever find it!" Matthew 7:14 In some sense, the path to heaven is very safe—but in other respects, there is no road so dangerous! It is beset with difficulties. One false step—and down we go! And how easy it is to take that treacherous step—if grace is absent! What a slippery path is that—which some of us have to tread! How many times have we to exclaim with the Psalmist, "But as for me, my feet were slipping—and I was almost gone!" If we were strong, sure-footed mountaineers, this would not matter so much; but in ourselves, how weak we are! Even in the best roads—we soon falter! In the smoothest paths—we quickly stumble! These feeble knees of ours—can scarcely support our tottering weight! A straw may trip us up—and a pebble can wound us! We are mere infants, tremblingly taking our first steps in the walk of faith. Our heavenly Father holds us by the arms—or we would soon tumble down! Oh, if we are kept from falling, how must we bless the patience, power and wisdom of God—who watches over us moment by moment—and day by day! Think— how prone we are to sin, how apt to choose dangerous paths, how strong our tendency to cast ourselves down —and these reflections will make us sing more sweetly than we have ever done, "Glory to Him, who is able to keep us from falling, and to present us before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy!" Jude 24 We have many foes—who try to push us down, and destroy us! The road is rough—and we are weak! But in addition to this, enemies lurk in ambush, who rush out when we least expect them, and labor to trip us up, or hurl us down the nearest deadly precipice! Only an Almighty arm can preserve us from these unseen foes, who are seeking to destroy us at every step! Such an arm is engaged for our defense. He is faithful, who has promised, and He is able to keep us from falling, so that with a deep sense of our utter weakness, we may cherish a firm belief in our perfect safety! by Charles H. Spurgeon
