12-7-14: OFFICER ENCOUNTERS MAN WITH SAMURAI SWORD – Officers responded to report of subject walking the streets with a pipe or similar object in his hands. Officer Ramirez arrived on scene and found the subject in the #1 lane of Garden Grove Blvd carrying a samurai sword and cutting his arms. Officer Ramirez immediately started talking with the subject and was able to calm him, and convince him to put the sword down. Once the subject put the sword down, officers were able to detain him without incident. The subject was taken to HBMC with superficial cuts to his arms and treated. Tremendous self-restraint by Ofc. Ramirez. Great example of officers utilizing mental health training when encountering people in crisis.
