12 December – 1653 – “Barebones Parliament” dissolves; Oliver Cromwell becomes Lord Protector. 1911 – Delhi, India. George V is enthroned as Emperor of India and receives a new specially made – at India’s expense – diamond-laden crown reputedly valued at 60,000 pounds. In order to crown him in India, a suitable head piece had to be made, as the Crown Jewels of England cannot leave the country. The Delhi Durbar Crown promptly became part of the Crown Jewels of England and can never leave the country. Any country which wishes to crown an English sovereign will have to cough up yet another crown. 1936 – H.R.H. the Duke of Windsor boards H.M.S. Fury, bound for France and exile.
