12 Years a Slave - This movie is, hands down, the best film I have seen this year. The raw emotion this movie hits you with will make anyone feel the horror of slavery and the sadness of Solomon. Ejiofors performance is masterful- the emotion he is able to emit is profound. There are a few key scenes that should easily put him at the top of the Best Actor list for the upcoming Oscars. Many of you have probably not heard of the director, Steve McQueen (black Steve McQueen, not old white guy). He has two films before this that I also highly recommend- Thirst and Hunger. All of his movies have one thing in common: Michael Fassbender. He is the lead in the two former films and plays the main supporting actor in 12 Years. In all three films, Fassbender really gives you a fantastic performance. TL;DR This film hits you from all fronts. The acting is superb, the story is strong, and the directing is spot-on. The soundtrack, while simple, has a lot of power. This is essential cinema, I truly believe that EVERYONE should see this film.
