12th Meeting of ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (Nay Pyi Taw, 10-12 June 2014) ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄ ®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®® Excellencies, ASEAN Information Ministers, Secretary General of ASEAN Distinguished Delegates, Good Morning! 1. First of all, I would like to extend my warm welcome to ASEAN Information Ministers, Secretary General of ASEAN and all Delegates to Nay Pyi Taw. It is my great pleasure to deliver an opening speech at the 12th Meeting of ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information. 2. The theme of Myanmars ASEAN Chairmanship is Moving Forward in Unity to a Peaceful and Prosperous Community. At the 9th Summit in 2013, ASEAN Leaders decided to build an ASEAN Community that is peaceful, stable, prosperous and competitive with a view to achieving enduring solidarity and unity among the peoples and Member States of ASEAN. 3. ASEAN Charter was adopted in 2008 and ASEAN has become a legal personality and institutional framework to build and strengthen ASEAN Community. After the ASEAN Charter came into force, ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) were tasked to implement measures under the umbrella of ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community. 4. Moreover, AMRI is also tasked to coordinate with other ASEAN pillars to build up ASEAN identity in the interest of ASEAN Member States. 5. Myanmar is implementing ASEAN projects under the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity including awareness promotion and people-to-people contacts through the dissemination of information. At the same time, our new democratic government is implementing unprecedented reforms in political, economic and social sectors. 6. In media sector, we are concentrating on the development of media that is conducive to the Myanmar people by bringing closer between the government and local community. It is imperative to create socially responsible media and to ensure media freedom which is essential to realize this aim. 7. New Media Law has been enacted with the aim of creating smooth and disciplined media. The government is conducting professional journalism trainings and media development seminars with the cooperation of local and foreign organizations. The government is also encouraging the stakeholders to conduct workshops on media ethics. 8. We will continue to take additional educational measures for media personals. I wish to emphasize that cooperation is needed for the harmonization of transparent media and social responsibility. Your Excellencies, 9. Media is an important channel for ASEAN peoples to promote core values of ASEAN; unity in diversity. 10. Media is also a bridge between ASEAN peoples to enhance friendships and understanding among ASEAN peoples. ASEAN interconnectivity, therefore, plays an important role in ASEAN community. 11. Media is very effective tool to disseminate the information. I believe that AMRI will be able to extend existing work plan and adopting appropriate activities to promote ASEAN Community and socially responsible media in accordance with the theme, “Socially Responsible media for peace and prosperous community”. 12. By promoting information and media, ASEAN peoples especially the marginalized one, will have more access to information. People-to-People relation will be enhanced by diversified media and the social TV broadcasters. 13. It is imperative that ASEAN promote a socially responsible media for the ASEAN Community. We are confident that the AMRI Meeting will bring about fruitful outcome toward achieving our objectives. In this way, our aim of one vision, one identity and one community will certainly be achieved. 14 With this note, I declare the 12th Meeting of the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information opens. Thank you. ®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®® ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
