1324. SITTING - While sitting (i.e. on a chair) it is makrouh to place on foot upon the thigh of the other foot, especially if the foot is placed in the direction of another person, especially the elders/learned. For women to sit in such manner is prohibited as it displays their figure. From the sunnah, if one wishes to rest one foot, then it should be placed under the thigh/buttocks. It is prohibited while in the masjid waiting for the prayer, sitting on buttocks and crossing legs and resting arms around legs and clenching fingers together. From the sunnah the best means to sit (especially for students of ilm) is the way Jibrael (AS) sat during incident when he came in the form of a man asking about iman, islam, ihsaan etc.. i.e. to place both hands on lower thigh. ---------------------- from my notes during Q&A with Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad
