14. February, 2014 – at The Wave, Muscat We arrived yesterday from Masanah to find large parts of Muscat underwater and all the wadis overflowing, causing rivers to run across the roads. Oman Sail have organised two flats for us, just minutes walk away from their main base. It is great to have somewhere we can call home for the next few weeks. It was a real luxury to stay in the hotel at Masanah, but lovely to know that we really have our own space. Given the state of Muscat, the drama of the day was getting Louise to the local hospital after a tumble. Aurora got us through rivers that you could feel pushing the car. It was a relief to discover that no real damage had been done to Louises ankle, and probably the most nerve wracking drive and least eventful visit to a hospital that any of us have ever had, thank goodness! Yesterdays plan was to sail from Masanah to The Wave with Roger on board, which would have been wonderful. With strong winds in Masanah and thunder and lightning in Muscat, both of which were expected to get worse, it was probably best not to test a prototype system! It has been great to get to know Roger, having heard so much about him, and having spoken to him on Skype, I felt I knew him already, but its always lovely to meet somebody properly. He has done an amazing job, particularly given the constraints I placed upon him. I know that his friend Jim, from Omron New Zealand, has also helped hugely. He has programmed the system beautifully, and even made changes at the last minute. I also have to thank his wife, Fay, for lending him to me. It was sad to see him go last night – it hasnt really sunk in that he has gone yet. Fortunately, we still have Pete, who has installed the system with Roger. The current plan is to sail the boat down here on Sunday. Its fantastic having one of the best guys in the business on board. I know that he will be able to fix any problems that arise when we push the system hard. I am amazed how quickly the two of them have been able to work. I really cant thank them enough.
