14 years ago today was the worst day of my life. July 8, 2000. I got THE phone call, Hours before. my beautiful, wild, kind-hearted daughter Dana Elizabeth Knapp was gunned down on a dirty street in Utica, NY. Her crime? Trying to help a young mother in a domestic situation . Through the years of anger, sadness and incredulity I have lived and grown as a person, a friend, mother & wife. I have a clear understanding of the blessings I have. The people who have loved & cared for me unknowingly have turned me around. I am empathetic, glad to be alive and I treasure everyday. I miss my child. She would have been 34 on July 22. The mother of friends to Dana (TSW) set up a scholarship in Danas name at our local Oxford Academy HS. Each year one student receives a one time $250 scholarship. The criteria is someone who has Financial need, pursuing Humanities &/or Arts & who has overcome obstacles on their way to graduating. Thirteen students so far have benefited from Danas Memorial Scholarship. Money generously donated in the past has supported the scholarship fund. At this time two more students will receive scholarship before the funds run out. So.. I am asking , if you can, will you /would you please keep the scholarship going? Donations can be anonymous. I get a notification when someone contributes, but never a dollar amount. I hope that Dana will be remembered for many more years, and the scholarship will at the least help other students, and someone will say her name OUT LOUD.
