15 hours, one hair brained idea, one flooded Middle School Gym floor, extremely cool Principals and VPO parents, Community help, and what do you get? An EXCELLENT DAY! Yesterday at 2pm my friend Jacy Griffin and I were volunteering at the Middle School, discussing how sad it was that the beautiful gym floor had to be pulled up due to a recent flood. Jacy said, “wouldn’t it be neat if we could have all the kids at school paint their names on the concrete gym floor before the contractors come in to lay down the new wooden one?” Of course I agreed at the epic coolness of this idea, and we called the Principal over to share the thought. Mr. Benoit was intrigued, and said he would check on the floor contractor’s schedule to see how soon the concrete would be covered up. Fast forward to 2 hours later, I get a call in my car from the Vice Principal saying, “Lauren, if you want to do this it has to be tomorrow”. Immediately I thought of two people to call - Lis Weller at Rodda Paint in Gig Harbor, and Kathy Bauer at Two Waters Arts Alliance on the Peninsula. Rodda Paint has donated paint to the community mural projects I have done in the past, and they (without hesitation) said “absolutely, come right on in and get what you need.” Two Waters Arts Alliance did the same, and let us borrow 175 paint brushes. Who has 175 paint brushes at the ready? My pals at TWAA. Late night posters to advertise at the school, emails to the fantastic gals on the Volunteer Parent Organization of Harbor Ridge Middle School, one evening call to our local hero reporter Hugh McMillian, and a hair brained idea blossomed into the real meal deal. All because my out of the box thinker friend Jacy saw a possibility, the community rallied, and the kids and staff made the vision come to life. The fact that it was also my son’s 12th birthday and I got to go all Norma Ray standing on the cafeteria tables to announce the plan -made it all that much better. This my friends was truly an excellent day.
