150 Voices for 150 Years: An Autobiography of Us We return - TopicsExpress

150 Voices for 150 Years: An Autobiography of Us We return today to one of our most popular and loving correspondences, that between Lt. George Hurlbut of the 14th Battery of the Ohio Light Artillery and Miss Angeline. Weve been privileged to watch the evolution of George and Angies relationship, their affections becoming more pronounced with each letter. Below is a letter from Angie to George. While he updates her on the welfare of fellows from home, the progress of the War, and his welfare, Angie keeps George in the know about the happenings at home. We hope you enjoy the read. July 28, 1864 Dearest George, Now, George, for a good long talk. We bid Hattie Hurlbut farewell this morning, and will welcome her back as Mrs. Austin Hescock. We wanted them to be married here, but as neither you nor Hiram could come, and Austin wanted to go to Meadville to be married, Hattie let him have his way. They expect to come back as far as Dave’s tomorrow, visit there a few days, then visit with some of Austin’s relatives in Freedom. Hattie is then coming home for a while, and that is all I know of their plans. As far as I know I think she has made a good choice. I trust she will be happy, but oh, it was hard to give her up. I have been busy getting her things ready, have worked until twelve every night this week to have them all ready by today. I am tired and sleepy tonight. Last Friday was my birthday, George, and the nicest present I received was a dear good letter from you. You write so, hopefully, Dear One. Were all as hopeful as you and as sure of success, this ware would not last long. How many prayers ascend to the High Throne for Peace. I am proud of your good faith. It is just and noble. Honor will ever crown those that are in the right. It is clouding up in the west and I hear thunder. I hope it will rain for we do need it so much. It has been so warm and sultry today. I fear this will be a dull and uninteresting letter, George, as I am too tired to think of anything to write about. Harriet and I cleaned the parlor today. We are going to have a party for Hattie and Austin when they come back. I expect Elias and Maria will be married soon, they are talking so now. Myrtle is here now on a visit. He is nearly as fat as Jerusha. Dave has his photograph gallery fixed up and is doing a good business. And now, George comes another goodbye, how many are written as spoken. May the choicest blessings of Heaven rest upon you, is the prayer of one through life will ever cherish your memory. More from this loving couple soon. #150VoicesOfUs #HashtagHistory
