150115 “Therefore thus I will do to you, O Israel; because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel!” For behold, he who forms the mountains and creates the wind, and declares to man what is his thought, who makes the morning darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth— the Lord, the God of hosts, is his name! (Amos 4:12-13) Amos continues to remind Israel of the sin they have committed against God and then lists corrective punishments he has already sent to try to get them to take notice of their unholiness, their profaning of his name and if there is one thing the Lord cannot accept it is that. Here the Lord warns there will be more to come and worse! The words Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!” should strike fear into the hearts of the people, but will it? There are plenty today who do not believe and who are strident in their opinion. That is OK, but what if they are wrong? I find it strange that people who otherwise in life strive to do the best they can for themselves are unwilling even to consider the prospect. If this life is all you want, then that is fine, but normally in life the sum of ones achievements are never enough, there is always something else to strive for, even little goals. So why do many not strive for the same in terms of the possibility of eternal life and settle for death to God? Probably because judgement is something they have no control over and that they have to trust another to deliver them and they do not trust him. Amos message to Israel is: You are at crunch point. What are you going to do?
