16th December, in history, will be the most saddening day as it is cemented with the misfortune that took place with the young girl whom we now know as Nirbhaya. I have a lot of old memories with this mishap. I continuously spent a lot of time with her family after the incident. On the first day when I reached the safdarjung hospital, I saw her tribulations. Nothing could have been worse than sending her to Singapore just for some brownie points and to try to cover up the Delhi Government’s failure to handle the situation. She was declared dead in Singapore... In the aftermath, the scene at India Gate looked like after the Emergency was declared. Everyone felt wounded. She was brought back from Singapore in a rush and hushed manner on the cold and dark winter morning, much like today. Thousand of delhi police officers circumscribed her family and her few relatives. I was with them at the time. I sat in one of the RTV in which her relatives were going for her cremation in dwarka and felt their overpowering emotions rush through me. As soon as we reached, the officers placed her body on the ground and started preparing for the cremation. According to the family’s traditions the last rites should only take place after the sunrise but seeing it being done in haste by the Delhi Police, her father and her brother revolted. This injustice broke me down, too and forced me to join the relatives into shouting down the Police and let the rituals take their course as we waited in grim silence for the sun to rise... Her soul was sent to the heavenly abode in an unpleasant manner. The authorities only leashed everyones voices and nothing else. As a parent, I think, we need to sensitise our sons and brothers towards the safety and security of women, rather than telling our women to be careful. This change in our thinking can be the only way to propel Delhi forwards from the shame and sorrow that this day brings each year...
