17 NOV 2013 - Climate Rally, Prince Alfred Park. So, its a cool, wet day in Sydney - average temperatures and normal late spring weather. The fires and heat are forgotten. If this rally were a few weeks ago, everyone would be out. But today... Im going to the rally. And Im going, not for you or me. This one is for the future. For the descendants Ill never have. I believe that the climate is changing and that we are significant contributors. I believe that yes, our scientific understanding may change in the future but that on best estimates we need to moderate our behaviour to avoid creating the factors that allow (not cause) the fires and tornadoes we have recently seen to be more frequent occurrences. I dont care if our estimation of the risk is wildly wrong - the risks are still incredibly high. I spend $1400pa Home and Contents insurance and nothing has happened in 20 years! Tony Abbott is going to cancel the insurance and give us back $600. If you support Tony Abbott cancel your insurances! The odds are way lower!!! Most importantly, I see our move from a carbon (and other greenhouse gasses) economy as a positive opportunity to commit to a sustainable economy with lower pollution, efficient use of resources, new jobs and a boost to our employment. I believe the benefits in the future will outweigh the costs of a structural change in our economy that this must bring. Worldwide there appears to be a massive attack on democracy from big media, big business and big religion. They are defending the status quo, claiming ruination and defending their own hyper-profits at OUR expense. Tony Abbott claims a mandate (at a little over 50% support). Lets send him a message. Today I am adding my voice to the ordinary people who think we must act now. It may be the only thing future generations can thank us for.
