17 years ago today I lay on an uncomfortable bed, trying to get some kind of sleep, but completely unable to. Id had a lot of change in a few short months at only 20 years old. Id gotten married. Found out I was pregnant. Was thrown into the deep end of parenthood with the premature birth of our daughter... and just 12 days later made the transition from being a Preemie mom to an Angel Mom as our daughter was given her wings. In 1998 the internet was in its infancy. There was no Facebook, no instagram, no twitter to reach out on. You felt isolated. You felt alone, surrounded by the uncomfortable silence of others. Its not just the memory of what happened that day, but the aftermath that makes me loathe the very idea of January 26th. This year, however, Ive decided to take back the day... the next 100 days, actually. Im going to take part in the 100 Days of Happiness - 100happydays. And what better day to start than the 17th anniversary of gaining my very own guardian angel (who has, undoubtedly, had her hands beyond full ever since. Sorry kiddo... your mom is a frequent traveler on the Hot Mess Express!)? I cant think of a better way to honor the person who turned me from just plain Heather to Mom.
