17013 Private John Jones 9th (Pioneer) Battalion and 1/6th Battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment John Jones came from Blakenhall, Bloxwich, and as a boy had attended Croft Street School. He had also been a choirboy at St Peter’s Church. He was married and he and his wife, Annie, and their four children lived at 78 Victor Street in Caldmore. He had enlisted in The South Staffordshire Regiment in January 1915 and was posted to the 9th (Pioneer) Battalion. Before joining up, John had worked as a goods porter for the London and North-Western Railway. He arrived in France on 24 August 1915. He served with the 9th South Staffords up until late 1917, when a significant number of soldiers from the battalion were transferred to other units in exchange for men who had technical skills more suited to pioneer work. He was drafted to the 1/6th Battalion. Private Jones was killed on 16 March 1918, when his battalion were the 137th Brigade Reserve, located at Annequin. He is buried at Noeux-les-Mines Communal Cemetery Extension: Plot IV, Row B, Grave 7.
