18 Oct 2014 - STORM WARNING NORTH AND WEST VANCOUVER ISLAND An intense 975 mb low and frontal system moving toward the BC coast from the Pacific will stall to the west of Haida Gwaii and Vancouver Island later today. Ahead of the front winds will rise to southerly and southeasterly Storm Force today and tomorrow as the low drifts toward Prince Rupert, the cold front moves into the coast, elongates and weakens. This system is the post-tropical remnant of Typhoon VongFong and has lost a good deal of its moisture. That should be taken in relative terms as this system will deliver showers increasing to rain overnight to most areas. The presence of an interior high will likely bring some periods of clearing to the lower mainland, Gulf Islands and southernmost Vancouver Island through late morning and afternoon. That will give way to increasing cloud, showers and then overnight rain lasting through Sunday. West coast Vancouver Island can expect rain to become heavy, a feature that will move through north and east Vancouver Island before the system weakens late Sunday. Longer term, a series of lows and frontal systems will keep the week fairly damp. The weak upper air flow will become more coherent and drive saturated systems onto the BC coast. There is a possibility that considerable moisture from Hurricane Ana, currently moving through the Hawaiian Islands, will be drawn into the flow making midweek conditions very wet. A short break in the train of frontal systems should occur as this present system moves inland and weakens on Monday and winds abate to below warning levels. Another frontal system will approach the region late Tuesday. - West coast Vancouver Island winds SE Gale Force to 45 knots (83 kmh) rising to SE Storm Force to 60 knots (111 kmh) by early afternoon.
