19 SEPTEMBER 1930... THE CARIB UPRISING IN DOMINICA. A confrontation arose between police and the Kalinago people over their ancient custom of travelling between the islands exchanging produce. The British Administrator EC Eliot was determined to crack down on what he saw as smuggling. Five armed policemen entered the Territory that day to arrest smugglers. The Kalinago people reacted with stones and bottles and the police fired into the crowd injuring four Kalinagos, two of whom died of their wounds. Administrator Eliot called a warship from Trinidad which fired starshells over the settlements. An inquiry was carried out into conditions on the Reserve and the Moyne Commission also visited in 1939. Every year, this week is observed as Kalinago Week.
