1965.... June/july and I was in the LD football team as left wing and I could shoot with both foot equally well and in our first match we were playing Mount Hermon at our LD ground. Bright sunny day in spite of monsoons and my parents drove in from Assam in a standard Herald car along with my sister to see me play... My elder uncle who was then Chief Medical Officer Darjeeling District (Late Dr Nirmal Chandra Sengupta) and visiting doctor to all the schools in the hills was also there along with my late cousin and our coach was late Mr Karma Tshering. On one side of the field was the Mounties crowd and on the other was our LD crowd along with my huge family cheering us on... 1 2 3 4 who are we for 5 6 7 8 who do we appreciate..... and i played like an inspired idiot running all over and having a ball of a time.. we beat them 2-1 and post the match Fr Forestell allowed me to go back with my parents as it was the week end and in my excitement I ran and squeezed in with my family into the tiny car to be with my Uncle and my cousin in their bungalow.... when we reached Eden Hospital where my Uncle stayed we realised that I was still in school football uniform and kit and rather than go back to school and change Baba got me new clothes in Khup Chand tailors who at any case sold school uniform and it was so comical to go back to school in my new clothes and wearing football boots..... HELL!!!!! Was I ragged..... but forgiven when they saw the "tuck" I brought back.
