~1979 Worship was indeed important to the early settlers of Fort Atkinson, and as in most new towns, religious services were very informal, often being held in peoples homes. They considered themselves fortunate whenever an itinerant minister wandered into the area and was able to preside over their service. The first such service took place in Fort Atkinson in the winter of 1837, in the home of E.N. Foster. A Methodist minister named Pillsbury had come to the settlement from New York at the invitation of Mrs. Caroline Barrie. Later, in 1852, the first church was erected on south Main Street. It was the Methodist Episcopal Church, and although it burned down twice, it was reconstructed both times on the same site. Most of Fort Atkinsons present day churches were begun in the 1800s, so, many of todays congregations are bound together by tradition as well as faith.
