1999 WC Tragedy for SRT The next match was against Zimbabwe at Leicester on May 19th.The Indian team was to go to bed on May 18th India’s coach Anshuman Gaekwad received a call from Mumbai, to tell him that Sachin’s father had passed away due a heart attack. The info was conveyed to Sachin by his wife, who was in London at the time with Sarah, their daughter. At a later point, an I-quote of Sachin, “I was shocked and didn’t believe it. I wanted to go to home”, was revealed. He left with his family to India and on match day morning the other players woke up to the shock of his absence and his father’s sudden demise. This personal setback and tragedy took public proportions in India. How un-selfish on the part of the general Indian public, which also includes me. Gaekwad was also questioned the same in the press-conference by the media and to which he said “We must wait for the funeral before we can even start thinking of asking him”. The next thing one notices is that Sachin Tendulkar returns back almost immediately and had to make the most difficult comeback of his career, till date probably. Sachin returned back to London the next day itself and was hounded by media persons. His reply on being asked the reason for his quick return was that “My mother thanked me for coming but then insisted that I join back with the team immediately after the funeral. She said that is what my father would have liked me to do. The whole country wanted me to play. The WC is very important to India, so I completed the necessary rites and took the first flight back to be here with the team” When he reached hundred, he looked up to the heavens and celebrated the hundred as he does now days, paying a tribute to his father. The great wall of India (Dravid) would give Sachin very good company in the middle as India won the match easily and yet another M.O.M for Sachin Tendulkar. I can remember exactly that I myself got emotional during the hundred moment. During the presentation, he admitted that “It wasn’t easy to concentrate. Strange feelings crept in. I had a strong feeling that my father was sitting up there and watching”
