A graduate student conference held at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio Saturday, February 15, 2014 The Department of Educational Leadership of Miami University is pleased to announce the 13th Graduate Student Conference on Leadership, Culture, and Curriculum. This conference is a multidisciplinary forum for graduate students to present their research and scholarship on topics of leadership, culture, and schooling. Faculty collaboration and participation in support of graduate student projects is encouraged. The conference is scheduled for Saturday, February 15, 2014. It will be held in the Farmer School of Business at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Conference Theme: In his letter from the Birmingham jailhouse, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. noted the interrelatedness of all communities by stating “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” (1963). These powerful words call us to have a dialogue about issues of educational activism throughout the world. How do these words resonate today? In general the questions below should help guide your proposal. To what extent can educational agents/activists preserve a rightful and ethical education in school systems around the world? In what ways are educational policies and discourses allowing or disallowing teacher’s resistance to the status quo? To which educational theorists and philosophers can we look to address the task of preparing teachers and students for the 21st century? Is organized schooling too inextricably bound to the status quo to save our world? We invite submissions that: • Utilize a critical analysis of educational activism and how these actions inform educational leadership and schooling. • Explore how educational activism informs educational leadership and schooling • Utilize presentations from a variety of disciplines, which are theoretically informed, and engage diverse methodologies.
