2 Corinthians 10:17-18, “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved; but the one whom the Lord commends. When we do something well, we want to tell others and to be recognized for our achievements. But recognition is dangerous—it can lead to inflated pride. Such has been the case for me recently when I achieved a personal victory. I prayed to God before the event, seeking His strength and endurance to make it to the finish. God heard my prayer, God granted my request and God cheered me on. Once over the finish line, God did not get what was rightfully His—honor and praise. After the celebration and congratulations from family and friends had calmed down, the dawning of realization set in. I did not give God the honor, glory and praise He deserved for the victory. I was immediately heartsick over my actions. I had gotten caught up in the moment and excitement that I overlooked the One who had heard my request and was with me to the finish. You see, God did not want to stop the celebration, however, in that moment He did need to humbilize me and to remind me of the danger to the pride creeping inside me. It is in His great love for His children that He disciplines us and warns us of imminent danger. How much better it is to seek the praise of God rather than the praise of people. Praise is good when we receive it, but it is much better to give credit where credit is deserved. The next time you feel a great sense of accomplishment, try telling God first. He delights that you share the moment with Him first and He will praise you greatly as you praise Him first.
