2. PULSE Pulse is a regular, recurring emphasis of a fixed interval of time. Much like we feel our heart beat in a regular pulse, we often feel a regular beat, or pulse, in music. TRACK 6: Heartbeat Sample In some musical cases, the pulse and the kick drum are identical or close to identical. In jazz/ swing music of the 1920s and ’30s, the bass drum drove the music. The bass drum also drives the parade. When you go watch a parade, what do you hear first? The bass drums. Likewise, in a samba/batucada group, the surdo (low, mostly double-headed drum) drives the spirit of the Carnival in Brazil. Check out the kick drum sound (Boo or Boom). The focus here is on the pulsation of the bass drum and how it drives the song. There is no backbeat on 2 and 4 for the following examples: TRACK 7: Four on the Floor Disco-Funk (Four on the floor) Boo-Ts- Boo-Ts- Boo-Ts- Boo-Ts (Repeat) > > > > (Quarter Note Accent) TRACK 8: Shuffle the Blues Shuffle/Blues (Basic sticking in triplet meter matrix) Boo-(Ki)-Boo-Boo-(Ki)-Boo-Boo-(Ki)-Boo-Boo-(Ki)-Boo > > > > TRACK 9: Samba Foot Action Brazilian/Samba/Funk Bass Drum Part (Repeat) (Dotted Quarter Note Accent) Boo-Ki-Ti-Boo-Boo-Ki-Ti-Boo-Boo-Ki-Ti-Boo-Boo-Ki-Ti-Boo (Repeat) > > > > (Quarter Note Accent)
