2 days ago (15 notes) Summer of Blur somethingquitespectacular: SUMMER OF BLUR I was lucky enough to see Blur at a few festivals this summer (granted, I did save up and also had family living in various location where Blur played, which proved to be quite helpful). Seeing them live was brilliant, obviously, but before launching into fab moments and cool renditions of songs, I wanted to mention the amazing Blur fans I met at the front barrier of the various festivals I attended. First of all, like one of my favourite “Blur confessions” explains: BLUR FANS ARE THE SHITE. For real. I met fans from all over: Finland, France, Sweden, Norway, the US, China, Spain, Belgium, Serbia, Poland, and Hungary. They sang along to all the songs, they brought signs and props, they emoted beautifully to This is a Low and Under the Westway, and pogoed – almost in unison! — to Popscene and Girls and Boys. One guy brought his two sons (wearing cute Milky tshirts) so that their first concert was a Blur one. There were those who got to see Blur for the first time, and were (as expected) blown away. There was the Swedish girl who came with her brother and mum and gave Smoggy a note that made him smile. There were the hilarious Russian and Polish girls who were mad, mad Graham fans – yelling “I love you!” which elicited a wink, a smile, and an embarrassed shrug (not necessarily in that order). There was the Belgian guy who yelled “he’s talking about me!” when Damon told the crowd we were the best he’d experienced all year; the funny Spanish guy who mixed up Tender’s “oh why oh my”; and the Hungarian guy who harmonized beautifully to End of a Century. When I wasn’t watching the band, I loved looking at the fans – so much joy! – truly: Blur fans kick ass. So, onto Oya and Sziget: At Oya, Graham was in fine form – doing a jig near the beginning of the set, then putting his guitar strap on his forehead and trying to play while Damon jumped the barriers during Country House. When Damon was at the barrier during this song, Smoggy and another guy were holding him up – this caused Damon some discomfort because he yelled at them to “stop giving me a wedgie, you bastards!” – which made Smoggy laugh. Damon also got a bit giddy during Caramel, and started teasing the back-up singers, which made them laugh. This song and Trimm Trabb may be my favourites because they’re so spine-tingling – from Damon’s existential howl in Trimm Trabb to the escalating “rise!” of the back up singers in Caramel. (Is that what they’re actually saying?) Also, Dave stands up at the end of Caramel, which is great because he’s usually hidden behind his drums. Damon – again! — forgot some Parklife lyrics, which I think is reason enough to add Phil Daniels to the Blur roster. However, it is nice when he forgets the lyrics, because it guarantees both a confused look and laugh from Graham. Another lovely moment was Damon’s soft singing at the end of Tender. The band finishes the song, then Damon gets the crowd to sing “oh my baby, oh my baby…” and he sings quietly and inaudibly at the same time. Beautiful. At Sziget, Graham lost his glasses four songs in – which I think was a record, because they usually fly off during Popscene (the second song of the set). The introduction to Coffee and TV is pure Graham: he simply says “hello!”, then launches into the song. When he did this at Sziget, he seemed a bit taken aback when we all yelled “hello!” right back. I also want to mention Alex’s scarf/short outfit at this festival: Awesome. I think he may have borrowed Graham’s shirt for the occasion. There was a guy who kept on yelling at Damon to take his pants off – but I think he meant his jeans, not the British “underwear” – and Damon (now infamously, as current gifs attest) showed off his boxer briefs. Because this is the last concert for a bit — before Blur play Berlin in September — things got a bit silly; a bit of a water fight ensued between Damon, Smoggy, and a younger road crew member – Damon, who usually throws water at the audience, ended up dumping it on Smoggy, instead. After Damon wandered away to do some singing, Graham asked Smoggy if he was alright. Cute, right? Whew! That’s about all I can remember for now. So, thanks to Blur and all those mad, mad Blur fans for making my summer great! x aawwwww
