2 years ago, I had the chance to visit Dhaka, Bangladesh for a week. On one of the days, a young street kid who was selling sweets ran up to me and started desperately pulling and clinging on to my t-shirt. At first, I politely declined, thinking he was trying to sell me something. But he kept going and going as I walked on. He just wouldnt let go. I stopped and looked at him. And finally realised what he was doing. He thought the t-shirt I was wearing (which had red sequins on it) had real red rubies on it. And he was sooo excited and amazed that he wanted to grab one. I chuckled and smiled at him as he pointed vigorously at them and then tore a few of them off and handed them to him. He walked away with the biggest grin Ive ever seen. In sheer awe of what he now possessed. This story reminds me a little of the position many of us are in, in this more fortunate part of the world. We have so much at our disposal, resources, opportunities, networks etc that sometimes its easy to forget what we have to our advantage. Things that a lot of others would clamour and climb mountains to have. But often we get stuck in a cycle of consumption, where we just take take take. Consume, consume, consume. Whether its food, or shopping, or more widely, the planets natural resources. We are constantly living in a state where our value is determined by our level of consumption. You only have to visit a landfill site to see how much we throw away, that could still be re-used. Is this sustainable though? We know this cant continue at its current rate. This week video touches on this topic. Do you take and take more than you give? This could be in your relationships. Or the money your parents invest in you. Or the education and opportunities you receive. And not saying theres anything wrong with this but whats the return on investment? What do you CREATE? If you enjoyed this post, hit that share button to pass the message on. Its time to create something better. Rather than consume the same old crap.
