2010 general election in scotland: SNP 491,386 - seats 6. conservatives 412,855 - seats 1. liberal democrats 465,471 - seats 11. Scottish voting in 2011 AV referendum - 64% no Until Thatcher government the Conservative party regularly polled 25-40% in Scotland. In 1955 they polled 50.1%. There are substantially higher numbers of Conservatives in the Scottish Assembly than Scottish Conservatives in Westminster, due to the PR system. I guess my points here are (remember, coming from a liberal Labour-supporter): 1) Scottish people are not as historically progressive or left wing as they may think. Present surveys of societal attitudes confirm this. Thatcher-hating is not a sustainable political credo long-term. The right wing will return in Scotland and independence makes this more, not less likely. 2) To state that there is a democratic deficit in Scotland as we dont elect our governments or our votes dont count is illogical. The first past the post system is useless but the people of scotland rejected its replacement: a genuine chance to improve democracy. This election is not about improving democracy in Scotland: it is about creating artificial differences based on geography rather than values. What a truly bizarre idea.
