Song as a monument: Sanja Iveković’s On the Barricade ‘Paradox’ is the word Andreas Huyssen, a literary critic and cultural historian, does not hesitate to use when theorizing contemporary culture’s ‘obsession with the issue of memory.’ Consider, for instance, the number of museums, monuments, archives and commemorative sites that are growing at an accelerated pace. Since the Holocaust, there have been intensive discussions on the uses and abuses of memory and the limits of representing the past; while the development of technology continues to expand the possibility of recording, documenting and archiving the past in unimaginable ways. Paradoxically, according to Huyssen, this ‘mnemonic fever’ of the twentieth-century is caused by ‘the virus of amnesia that at times threatens to consume the memory itself.’
