2011 AIBA World Junior champion Ciara Ginty 2011 AIBA World Junior champion Ciara Ginty Ciara Ginty was on top of the World this morning after being crowned lightweight champion at the AIBA World Youth and Junior Championships in Albena, Bulgaria. The 16-year-old Mayo orthodox beat Turkey’s Esra Yildiz on a unanimous decision to secure the 60kg gold for Ireland. Yildiz began this contest like a house on fire, but Ginty, who boxes out of the Geesala BC, showed her composure and slick boxing skills to subdue that fire with a superb display of counter-punching The Turk was working well on the inside in the opening frame as both boxers took it in turn to command the centre of the ring. Ginty was responding with some well times counters, a great combo in a neutral corner near the end of the frame being the pick of the bunch. It was more of the same in the second, Yildiz pouring forward, Ginty moving, feinting and picking off shots off the front and back foot. By round three the pattern was well established and Ginty was on her way to become winning Ireland’s 9th gold medal this century at an AIBA World tournament. Ginty won four fights en route to the top of the podium in Albena. She beat China, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Turkey, all on unanimous decisions. “I’m waiting to get my breath back, “said Irish team manager Anna Moore from ringside in Albena. “What a performance, Ciara was absolutely brilliant.” Cork’s Christina Desmond will be in action at around 4.30pm this afternoon versus Kazakhstan’s Gauhar Yermekbay in the Youth 69kg final. Ireland will be taking home at least one gold, one silver and one bronze medal from the tournament.
