2012 was a milestone year for tourism; over one billion tourists traveled the globe in a single year representing both a challenge and an opportunity, with implications for economic growth, development and sustainability. Throughout the year tourism has gained significant recognition at the world’s decision-making tables. The year was marked by substantial advances in all fields of UNWTO activity and thousands of local communities continued to benefit worldwide from UNWTO technical assistance projects and on-the-ground support.
