2013 Edition Synopsis Code Revisions by Sections: Section IX Reorganization of Section IX In the 2013 Edition, Part QG General Requirements and Part QF Plastic Fusing were added. Part QG consolidates the administrative requirements of Part QW Welding and Part QB Brazing. The reorganization was driven by the adoption of Plastic Fusing rules. The administrative requirements from Part QW and Part QB are extracted and then consolidated into Part QG. A global change was also made to adopt the term “organization” to replace “manufacturer”, “installer”, “assembler”, and “fabricator” throughout Section IX. The definition of terms, previously located in QW/QB-492 are now relocated to Part QG, QG-109. Hybrid Welding Processes Two types of hybrid welding process were adopted in the 2013 Edition: Hybrid Laser-GMAW Welding and Hybrid Plasma-GMAW. Common to these two hybrid welding processes is the use of multiple welding process in the same weld pool using a single torch to create the hybrid process. The use of short circuiting transfer mode, GMAW-S process, is not permitted.Hybrid Laser-GMAW is limited to the combination of automatic LBW and automatic GMAW. Hybrid Plasma-GMAW is limited to the combination of PAW and GMAW. The hybrid process is limited to machine welding only. The procedure qualification variables for Hybrid Laser-GMAW is shown in a Table QW- 268; Table QW-269 lists the procedure qualification variables for Hybrid Plasma-GMAW. Hybrid Plasma-GMAW process can be qualified and used for hardfacing and corrosion resistant overlay application using the list of special process variables in QW-269.1. Plastic Fusing Plastic Fusing is the new material joining qualification rules adopted in the Section IX. The new qualification is based on Appendix I of Code Case N-755. The initial application will be for high density polyethylene pipe (HDPE) fusing. The format for plastic fusing rules follows the structure, use of variables and testing requirements of Part QW-Welding. In order to separate qualification from production requirements, Part QF follows the Section IX Welding philosophy for establishing requirements for the plastic fusing variables. This allows plastic fusing procedure and performance qualification requirements to be properly addressed in Section IX. Production requirements will be addressed in the fabrication sections. Typical production requirements that are not part of this proposal, but will be addressed by the fabrication Codes, are nondestructive examination of fused joints, qualification of equipment, quality assurance requirements for HDPE material, supplementary written tests for operators, data loggers, and preproduction training and testing of personnel.
