2013 Youth Summit Development Case Competition Eligibility and Guidelines: 1. What is the WBG Youth Summit Development Case Competition? The 2013 Youth Summit is a World Bank Group sponsored event that will be held on October 3rd, 2013 in Washington DC using a development case competition as a platform for discussion and results. It is an event that will engage young staff at the World Bank directly with youth from around the world under a common theme: Youth Entrepreneurship: Cultivating an innovative spirit to alleviate global youth unemployment. Several subtopics have been identified along this theme and continue to pose serious challenges to the development community, including education, youth employment and millennial communication. Participants of the competition can compete individually or join in teams of 2-5 people and submit proposals that create socially innovative1 solutions to four real problems facing development practitioners today. The winners for each of the four development cases will be invited to 2013 Youth Summit to share their proposals and gather with other youth from around the world for a day of learning and networking. 2. Purpose a) Increase the visibility of youth both within the World Bank and at a global level; b) Connect young change makers with young World Bank staff; c) Recognize and learn from efforts by other young social innovators around the world; d) Crowd source a knowledge exchange to solve global youth development issues; and e) Catalyze youth ideas to supplement current World Bank Group and private/multi sector firm social impact projects or programs. 3. Eligibility a) Who can join the competition? Any young person within the WBG or around the globe can participate in the competition. Non- WBG participants can be working professionals, college students or any young person in the world with the drive to innovate. For the purpose of this competition, ‘young person’ will be understood as a person between the ages of 18 to 35. b) Who is eligible to compete? Submissions are accepted from both individuals and teams with a maximum of 5. In the vein of knowledge sharing, we encourage teams try to include both students and professionals within the groups. Persons and teams outside the World Bank Group are highly encouraged to participate in this competition. 5. Submission Guidelines Participants must submit their solutions to [email protected] including the cover sheet template provided on the event website (bit.ly/WBGYouthSummit) by the competition deadline. All submissions must be written in English. No late submissions will be accepted . 5.1 Proposals Participants must submit a proposal of 2,000 words maximum, in English, to [email protected] by September 8, 11:59pm EST. Proposals provide solutions to one of the development cases with a realistic action plan of implementation, and can include any of the following: a) Measurement of social impact (including monitoring and evaluation); b) Market readiness (i.e., understanding of conditions and constraints in target country); c) Competition & SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats); d) Strategic Alignment & USP (unique selling point) (i.e., what is the comparative advantage); e) Risk Assessment and Analysis; f) Sustainable outcomes of the solution and operational impacts; g) Stakeholders; h) Team implementation strategy (i.e., clearly defined project objective and roadmap for implementation); i) Financial plan; and j) Feasibility Analysis. In addition to the proposal, participants must submit an executive summary no longer than 400 words that includes the following components: a) Problem realization (The problem you are trying to solve); b) States the solution in terms of a socially impactful product, project or development model; c) Addresses who the customer is and what is the benefit of the solution (target audience); d) What is innovative about your approach; e) Includes sustainability depth beyond revenue-generating concepts; and f) Includes a results framework (i.e., how you plan to measure results). Please send us your cover sheet, executive summary and proposal in one email to: [email protected] 5.2 Selection of Winning Proposals Each proposal will be submitted to an evaluation committee made up of representatives from the World Bank and our case sponsors. The evaluation committee will select one winner and one runner-up for each of the 4 development cases. The winners will be notified by mid-September via email, and representatives of each team will have the opportunity to present their proposals at the 2013 Youth Summit event, either in person or by video-conference. 6. Awards Awards differ by development case, but possible prizes include: a) Trip to Washington, D.C. to attend the World Bank’s first Youth Summit; b) Seed funding; c) Reputable learning or training opportunity; d) Opportunity to implement winning project within the organization; e) Other monetary compensation; f) Internship with World Bank or World Bank partner. Winning proposals are eligible to receive additional awards from the individual case sponsors.
