We’ve seen it before, Dubai taking the lead (remember the 2000’s) in the Middle East with grandiose announcements of global brands about to launch into a regional hub of leisure destinations, China forging ahead with massive destinations and multiple attractions (remember the 1990’s). Multiple fast tracked attractions throughout Southeast Asia in the late 1980’s, resulting in many failed and underperforming attractions. Now, decades later and having personally participated in several of these ventures, both successes and failures, Darrell has very candid opinions about the future of the leisure trends in the Asia/Pacific region and the opportunities this may bring to AALARA members. Darrell brings with him 30 years of experience and a successful track record in the development and operations of leisure, resort and residential communities. His career began in the California Disney Resorts and culminated in executive positions in Disney’s first foray into the international market, Tokyo Disney Resort. Darrell assumed the position of CEO of Ocean Park Hong Kong, where he successfully implemented a US$100 million strategic plan that doubled profits and visitorship and set the stage for its long term growth. He subsequently became CEO of the Sentosa Leisure Group in Singapore where he was responsible for the US$10 billion development of the iconic destination resort island which hosts 20 million annual visitors. Darrell has advised several destination resort developments in Dubai, South Africa and The Venetian Macau Resort.
