2014 CHAMPIONS TRHOPHY BREATHTAKING SEMIFINAL MATCH ARGENTINA VS NETHERLANDS ARGENTINA Defeats the Netherlands to play final against Australia today. Luciana Aymar will bow out of international field hockey with another title shot after Argentina edged the Netherlands 2-1 in a thriller to reach the Women’s Champions Trophy final. Argentina qualified to meet Australia in the final of the Women’s Champions Trophy today by beating Netherlands 2-1 with 42 seconds to go of an exciting match all the way. Australia beat New Zealand 3-0 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the other semifinal yesterday. The losers play for third place today. It was to be almost expected that the Dutch, with virtually their same World Cup winners, would play their best hockey against classical rivals Argentina after earlier unimpressive performances. Within 26 seconds of the start they had forced a penalty corner and almost scored. After some early unhappy moments, Argentina evened up play, but the Dutch went ahead through Lidewij Welten. Argentina equalized in 31 minutes with a high shot (Silvina D’Elía) following a penalty corner which could have been a penalty stroke. Carla Rebecchi netted the late winner which was only awarded after a long video referral by the Dutch for a foot fault. The outstanding stars of the game were the goalkeepers, Argentina’s Belén Succhi and Netherlands’ Joyce Sombroek who made great saves. Both teams had plenty of circle entries — Argentina 27, the Dutch 26 — and plenty of goal shots apart from five dangerous penalty corners by the Dutch and three by Argentina. New Zealand took a 2-minute lead (Anita Punt with the first penalty corner) in the first period which produced up-and-down play, but afterwards Australia had the upper hand and equalized in 26 minutes (Amelia Spence). In the penalty decider, Australia converted three of the first four chances,(Georgia Nancawen, Kari McMahon, Emily Smith) while New Zealand failed to score. In playoffs for 5th to 8th place, England beat Japan 3-1 and China beat Germany 5-4 with a sudden death 6th shot after a 0-0 draw in regulation time. England scored first half goals through Hollie Webb (penalty corner) and Sophie Bray. In the second half Japan’s Akana Shibata scored and England replied through Sarah Haycroft.
