2014, July 30 80. 5 LITTLE RED TORTOISES FROM HEAVEN I can just imagine a flock of birds flying overhead when Jesus spoke these reassuring words: Matthew 6:26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? I was meditating on this scripture not too many days ago and I saw a simple truth: In order for me to “look at the birds of the air,” I would have to LOOK UP. The Spirit of the Lord was gently reminding me, “Son, when you have a need, don’t forget to look heavenward to ME. Ask of Me and I will supply your need.” Saturday morning, the 26 of July, came. It was the day of baby Jonathan’s one-month party. I left my house early to collect his pre-ordered cake, and to buy some “ang ku kuehs” or Chinese Red Tortoise Cakes. Grandma wanted these customary cakes for the party displayed on the dining table and I didn’t want to disappoint her. After all, she had prepared the other customary item, red eggs. So I headed straight for the nearest Bengawan Solo outlet to get these must-haves. But when I reached this earliest-opening outlet, I saw half-empty shelves. I enquired about the little red tortoises and was told to my dismay that all their kuehs arrive only at around 11:30am. The party was at 11:30am! I panicked. I told myself that I should have gotten these red kuehs earlier and not left it to the last minute. I decided to pick up the birthday cake first. After paying for the lovely cake, I asked the cashier where I could find ang ku kuehs, the small, round types used in a baby boy’s one-month celebration. She told me to try the wet market nearby. All this while, I was “looking up” and praying, “God, please give me success!” I headed for the wet market and spotted a small stall selling ang ku kuehs. But they were not the right ones. They were the common bigger and flatter ones. I asked the lady if she had the small, round ones and she said, “I don’t have those. Those have to be pre-ordered.” My heart sank and I said to myself, “I should have ordered them earlier!” Undeterred, I went into the wet market and again I spotted a stall selling ang ku kuehs in translucent plastic boxes. But again, these were the big ones. I asked the lady in my broken Mandarin, “Do you have the small, round ones for a baby boy’s one-month celebration?” To my surprise, she said, “Yes, somebody ordered them but never picked them up. You want them? I have FIVE. You are lucky, this type has to be pre-ordered.” Aware that I was running out of time, I gladly took all five of them. Also, when I heard “five,” I knew that it was by God’s grace that I found these ang ku kuehs at the eleventh hour, as the number “5” represents God’s grace in Bible numerics. And so the party went as planned, Red Tortoise Cakes and all. Friend, when you have a need, even if it’s a mistake of your own making, don’t forget to LOOK UP—to your heavenly Father. He willingly supplies all your needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19)!
