2014 TSCC Advent & Christmas Guide: Guiding Scripture: Ecclesiastes 3:1 – 8 Sunday, November 30: Overview For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” Ecclesiates 3:1 I think it’s no coincidence that we celebrate Christmas on or near the shortest, coldest day of the year. Just when everything around us is dormant, seemingly lifeless, God gives us hope for eternal life in the birth of God’s Son, Emmanuel, God with us. We have mourned the passing of lifelong friends this year, but we have also celebrated births into our church family. We have mourned relationships lost to migration or other circumstance; are we as eager to celebrate those new members and new friendships God has brought our way? We “celebrate” the bad times, mourning loss and marking sad occasions, but God gives us good times as well. God has blessed us with all things new – babies, new members, new relationships – and given us the strength to preserve many wonderful memories, traditions and old friendships as well. For everything there is a season. Give me the good times and spare me the bad times. Better yet, let the bad times drive us closer to God and make us more eager to run into God’s loving arms. Let the good times inspire us to sing God’s praises and to tell others of God’s wonderful love. In all times and all seasons, let us love God with all our hearts, minds, and strength and our neighbors as ourselves. My prayer is that every season – of gain or loss, winter or summer, Christmas or Easter – will drive us into the arms of God and join us as one in Jesus Christ. Joel Tucker, Senior Pastor
