2015: INEC To Verify Voter Register Online – Jega — January 26, 2014 The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will come up with an online verification of voters register before the 2015 general elections, INEC chairman, Attairu Jega, has said. This, he said, would afford Nigerians the opportunity to verify their details before the actual voting period to avoid cases of all disenfranchisement. Jega also disclosed that nobody has ever intimidated, attempted to influence or bribe him to manipulate elections results in the country. The INEC chairman stated this on a popular radio programme “Guest of the Week” on Liberty Radio monitored in Kaduna yesterday. Jega said, “Maybe I’m lucky, but I can tell you categorically that nobody has ever intimidated me, nobody has ever attempted to influence me to do something wrong and nobody has ever attempted to bribe me to come and say I will give you this, do this. Where they do it to some lower officers and we have substantial evidence, we make them face the law. The formidable challenge is the general tendency among the Nigerian political class, not all of them, is that of winning elections by hook or by crook. They want to persuade the electoral commission, the officials to do them favours. If persuasions and paying fails, they want to intimidate or harass or threaten them. “And obviously that mentality of do or die, or winning by hook or crook is a dominant tendency in the mindset of politicians in Nigeria and that has to change.”
