2015: Presidency moves to checkmate Obasanjo The hope of getting appointments into plum Federal Government offices by loyalists of former president Olusegun Obasanjo may have been dashed, as the presidency finally draws the battle line. Sunday Sun learnt that the Presidency believes that it would be political suicide to allow the former president have a free rein in government due to frosty relationship between both leaders. Jonathan and Obasanjo’s relationship has been at its lowest ebb in recent times. This, it was learnt, was one of the reasons Obasanjo did not have a candidate among the new ministers sworn-in last Wednesday. It was the first time that the former president would not have a say in the choice of ministers in Jonathan’s presidency. Sources told Sunday Sun that the development was one of the ways of checkmating Obasanjo’s perceived excesses ahead of 2015. The Presidency was said to be convinced that the latest posture would help checkmate the former president. A South-south leader and key player in government circles had repeatedly warned the president’s camp against allowing Obasanjo play a role in the choice of Jonathan’s aides. Sunday Sun learnt that the influential leader was said to have hinged his position on the fact that it would be suicidal to allow the former president undue influence in terms of programs and policies. This, he said, played out in the early part of the Jonathan presidency and needed to be checked, given Obasanjo’s antics and criticisms. As a result, Presidency sources said government had stepped efforts to halt appointment of former president’s allies into government positions. A strong supporter of the former president lost his desire for ministerial position to the development. He is yet to be given an appointment despite spirited lobbying. Though the politician who is from Obasanjo’s home state had tried to use unofficial channels to secure appointment, his mission has so far come to naught. A presidential aide who pleaded anonymity said the development was real, saying the President reserved the right to determine those he wants to work with.
